ASSESSMENT 

Each component is assessed by a written examination lasting 1½ hours and all units carry an equal weighting of 75 marks.

CONTENT 

Further Pure Mathematics 1

Proof, Complex numbers, Matrices, Further algebra and functions, Further calculus, Further vectors

Further Pure Mathematics 2

Complex numbers, Further algebra and functions, Further calculus, Polar coordinates, Hyperbolic functions, Differential equations

Further Statistics 1

Discrete random variables, the Poisson, Geometric and Negative Binomial distributions, hypothesis testing and quality of tests, the central limit theorem, chi-squared test and probability generating functions.

Further Mechanics 1

Momentum, impulse, work and power, conservation of energy, Hooke’s law, elastic collisions in one and two dimensions.

Note 1 – Students choosing Further Maths will be taught Mathematics within the same group and will end up with an A-level in Maths and Further Maths (Also see A-level Mathematics information)

 

Note 2 – Depending on the group the final component may be a further mechanics component instead of Further Pure Maths 4

POSSIBLE CAREER PATHS 

Further Mathematics at Advanced Level is a challenging and highly regarded qualification and is in fact desirable for several university courses such as Sciences, Engineering and Computing. It provides you with the opportunity to explore new and more sophisticated mathematical concepts and demonstrates a strong commitment to your studies in Mathematics. Problem solving, data handling, analysis and good communication, which are found in the study of Mathematics, are transferable skills which are useful for any career.

POSSIBLE SUBJECT COMBINATIONS 

Further Mathematics cannot be chosen without also choosing the Mathematics course and it will broaden and enhance your subject knowledge. It will also support your learning in several other STEM subjects. If you are considering continuing with a STEM subject or Economics at degree level you will find that some universities require candidates to have a Further Mathematics qualification
