GCSE and A Level results success

GCSE Results

There proved to be nothing ominous about the spectacular thunder and lightning that heralded GSCE Results Day this August.  Consumed by the familiar mix of excitement and trepidation, students seemed scarcely to notice the torrential rain.  Arguably the noisiest such occasion we’ve ever staged, whoops of exaltation were sound track to the event.  Our 2022 cohort had simply outstanding results to celebrate – and celebrate they most certainly did!  We are delighted for them and extend our congratulations not only to the candidates themselves, but also to their parents and, of course, to the teachers and support staff who made it all possible, even in the aftermath of a pandemic.   Good job everyone!

Grade 9 is the highest GCSE grade allocated, reserved for the very best performances.  At Woodford this year no fewer than 44% of entries achieved this accolade, with 87% in the 9 – 7 range (equivalent to the old A* - A).  10 students achieved straight 9s and 50 students achieved a complete suite of 8s & 9s.

A Level

We are enormously proud of the Year 13 cohort who received their A Level results this August.  The students had no prior experience of public examinations.  Their GCSE year ended abruptly in March 2020 when the pandemic forced the closure of schools.  They navigated the anxiety of an international crisis, the emotional impact of enforced isolation and multiple transitions in and out of WCHS Remote Schooling over an 18 month period.  Centre Assessed Grades (CAGs) replaced their GCSEs and, in June this year, it was against a background of media scaremongering that they sat the first A-Level examinations to be scheduled in 3 years.

We would have been proud of the resilience and focus shown by these students, whatever the results.  But their performance has been outstanding.  78% of entries were graded in the top range:  A* to B with 20% achieving the top A* grade designed to recognise the highest levels of achievement.  56 students achieved 3 or more A* or A grades and 11 achieved straight A*s

Woodford students will be taking up places at universities all over Britain in October.  Five students (to date) have places confirmed at Oxford or Cambridge and nine will be taking up courses in Medicine or Dentistry.

We congratulate every one of our A Level candidates.  We are very proud of their achievements.

EPQ success in Year 12

111 students in Year 12 completed the Extended Project Qualification this year, with no less than 60% of entries achieving an A* or A grade, and 87% of entries between A* and B. A superb result for our Year 12 students who will hugely benefit from the university-level research skills that they have honed through completing this qualification, which is worth the equivalent of half an A Level.
